Obituary for KAM WAN YUEN

Kam Wan Yuen passed away on May 9, 2018 at the age of 96. She was born on January 22, 1922 in Canton China. In 1948, she married Chong Sing Yuen, a Chinese-American Armed Forces serviceman. Shortly after they were married, they made the long, arduous move to Hawaii by ship. About a year after their arrival in Hawaii, their first son Lawrence was born. Together they had two other sons, Raymond and Glenn.
Kam Wan and her husband worked hard to support their family. They owned and operated a mom and pop grocery store on Fort Street. Later she worked at two Chinese mercantile stores in Chinatown.
Kam Wan was a devoted, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family. She kept informed of local and national news through the newspapers and television. Particularly, following retirement, she became an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching football, basketball and especially UH Wahine volleyball.
Kam Wan lived independently in her home until the last two years of her life, when she resided at the Plaza Assisted Living at Punchbowl. There she met new friends, appreciated the caring staff, enjoyed periodic outings with family and delighted in continued frequent visits from family and relatives.
Kam Wan was predeceased by her son Glenn and her husband Chong Sing. She is lovingly remembered by her sons Lawrence and Raymond, daughters-in-law Rachel and Linda, grandchildren Jonathan, Travis, Trisha, and Jenny. She is also dearly remembered by many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Throughout Kam Wan’s life, she nourished everyone around her with love, kindness, and care. Family and friends will greatly miss her, and she will remain in everyone’s hearts with love and fondest memories.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the Nuuanu Memorial Park followed by burial at the Valley of the Temples.
