A proud partner of Honoring a Life

93, of Honolulu died peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at Leahi Nursing Home.
Born in Honolulu on February 17, 1926 to Edward and Mary Bush, Edna was preceded in death by husband Douglas (Pops) Kahalepuna Ellis, Sr. whom she married on March 22, 1941, daughter Harriet, son Valentine, and granddaughter Kristine Ellis-Fujimoto. Edna is survived by son Douglas K. Ellis, Jr. (Joan); sister Pauline Taggesell; granddaughter Heather Hassel and great-grandson Royce Ellis-Parilla, both of Washington; great-great-granddaughter Asia Ellis-Fujimoto, and three great-great-great grandchildren.
Edna was always busy and constantly in motion. Earlier in life she worked for many years in the shoe department of McInerny department store where she forged lifetime friendships with her co-workers and customers. In addition to her job at McInerny, Edna juggled family and various jobs at restaurants including Trader Vic's, Tropics, and the Princess Kaiulani Hotel. During her retirement, she tried her hand at real estate and focused on Hawaii Island projects. She also dabbled at genealogy, which later became her passion as she delved into researching her father's ancestry. Edna also participated for a number of years in the Kūpuna Component of the Hawaii DOE Hawaiian Studies Program at Prince Jonah Kuhio Elementary School.
Edna was a twenty-three year member of the Waikiki Elks Lodge 616, her first love and second home. She participated in the Emblem Club, Ladies of the Elks, Drug Awareness Committee, and the Wednesday Hawaiian singers group which she dearly loved. She also initiated the lodge's Kūpuna Committee and was instrumental in having a monument erected at Punchbowl National Cemetery commemorating the "Hawaii Sons of the Civil War." A welcoming friend to all who entered the Elks Lodge, Edna will be missed by her fellow members.
The family extends a heartfelt mahalo to the staff of Leahi Hospital and Saint Francis Hospice, all of whom provided Edna with extraordinary and loving end of life care.
A private graveside burial service was held at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary. Donations may be made in Edna's memory to Saint Francis Hospice at PO Box 29700, Honolulu HI 96817, or Leahi-Maluhia Foundation at 3675 Kilauea Avenue, Honolulu HI 96816.
